The TSE Systems Sleep Deprivation Wheel offers a fully automated and thus highly standardized mild way to induce sleep deficits in small laboratory rodents for the subsequent investigation of how sleep deficits impact on behavior, cognition, metabolism and physiology.
The wheel is a stand-alone out-of-home-cage system that is closed with a transparent front wall. Optionally, a video camera may be installed to monitor the behavior of the animal. A servo-motor drives the wheel at slow speed, thus forcing the animal to move continuously. Food and liquid can be provided in integrated containers. Aside from sleep deprivation studies, the wheel can flexibly also be used for forced exercise studies.
