Conditioned place preference is widely used in preclinical research to assess the rewarding or aversive properties of a drug. In the conditioning phase treatment with a drug is repeatedly paired with an environment A, while a control treatment is paired with a different environment B. When the animal has access to both environments in the subsequent test, increased time spent in the drug-paired compartment reflects rewarding/addictive properties of the drug, whereas the decreased time of stay reflects aversive properties. Learning processes like those observed in CPP are believed to be involved in the development of addiction.

A specially designed arena with 2 distinct compartments (clear vs. striped walls, custom patterns on request) is combined with tactile floor inserts that differ in surface structure to maximize discrimination between compartments. Usually equipped with an automated door the arena can also be provided with special open gates suitable for tethered animals. Use the integrated TTL control to trigger optogenetics laser generators or infusion pumps while the experiment is running – TTL output can even be coupled to animal location!

The Place Preference module of the Multi Conditioning System is part of the “2-compartment paradigms” software package. Due to the high-resolution 3-dimensional movement detection sedative effects of a drug can also be determined easily.
