Rotational Movement

The TSE Rotameter is a computer-controlled system designed to analyze rotational movement following unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine lesions in rodents (6-OHDA model). Lesioned animals tend to rotate toward their impaired hemisphere and this rotational behavior is increased by subsequent drug treatment.

The animal is tested in a special rotameter test cage that facilitates rotational movement. Bowl-shaped arenas are standard – smaller cylindrical arenas are available as a space-saving alternative. The animal is connected to a rotation sensor via a jacket and a flexible tether – the low-torque construction ensures that the animal’s movement is not restricted. The rotation sensor detects clockwise and counterclockwise rotations with a resolution of 1/250 turn.

The TSE Rotameter software allows to start and stop experiments independently in all connected units – each one has its own clock. For larger setups use the comfortable Remote Start function integrated into each unit to start the experiment at a distance from the PC. During the experiment number of rotations and changes of direction are detected according to user-defined filter settings. A real-time display allows seeing the status in each measuring place at a glance. The analysis includes tables presenting clockwise and counterclockwise rotations and direction changes for the whole experiment or split in time bins – data output is done for each animal or averaged for a group of animals. All data are also available as export files for further evaluation.
